The underlying premise of M-A-D-D is that the dangers we face as motorcyclists is due principally to "auto driver ignorance" of motorcycle safety issues. Hence the name "Motorcyclists Against Dumb Drivers." Auto drivers are, for example, commonly ignorance of the fact that their car rear view mirrors have holes in them large enough to obscure a motorcycle passing in an adjoining lane, and so they don't turn their "dumb" heads before changing lanes. Car drivers are ignorant of the fact that bikes stop more quickly than cars, and so they don't leave sufficient space between their car and a motorcycle ahead of them in order to avoid rear ending the biker if he has to make an emergency stop. M-A-D-D strenuously disputes the conventional wisdom that the risks we face riding on the streets are the inescapable result of the inherant "lack of visibility" of motorcycles. Rather, M-A-D-D takes the position that the real problem is that ignorant auto drivers fail to recognize that due to the vulnerability of motorcyclists, auto drivers have an enhanced responsibility to look out for motoryclists before crossing in front of them or turning into their right of way. It is M-A-D-D's position that the way to cure auto driver "dumness" is by education. And that is not just put forth as an idle cliche. Specifically: M-A-D-D urges that state auto driver test booklets be changed to provide extensive education on motorcycle safety and that the written tests that auto drivers must take to obtain auto drivers licenses and to renew drivers licenses contain a comprehensive list of motorycle accident avoidance questions. M-A-D-D further urges that because of the seriousness of the dangers auto drivers pose to motorcyclists that car drivers be denied drivers licenses unless they answer all motorcycle safety questions correctly.
